Reading is an important skill that should be learned at a young age as it can set a precedent for overall school performance. It is also a skill that parents cannot rely solely on schools to teach. In fact, children should even begin school with some basic form of reading comprehension like single words such as cat or dog. Since parents aren’t trained teachers, they can use all the help they can get to put their child on the right path. Here are easy ways to develop your child’s reading level.
1. Read to your child: One of the oldest parenting chores around is also one of the best at increasing a child’s reading skills. By reading to your child it helps their brain develop as they process the words being spoken to them. It also fosters a love of reading once they grow and can immerse themselves in the story.
2. Visit libraries and bookstores: Make reading a fun activity by taking your child to places that are full of books like the library or local bookstore. Most have sections specifically for children where they can look at a variety of books in a fun setting. If a child sees reading as something fun they are more likely to do it consistently and turn into an avid reader.
3. Play games with words: Playing games, whether with cards or a board game, is an indirect way to get a child to increase their reading level without them even noticing. If your child wants to play the game, they will have to learn to read.
4. Let them read to you: Switch roles, and have your child read to you. They may find it to be an enjoyable activity while you get to see how far they are developing.
Mastering reading will lead a child to mastering other activities.
